LED Screen Resolution Calculator

Calculate approximate LED screen resolution from physical screen size and pixel pitch for procurement and content planning.

What is LED screen resolution?

LED screen resolution is the total number of individual pixels that make up the display, measured as horizontal pixels × vertical pixels. Unlike consumer monitors that come in standard resolutions (1920×1080, 3840×2160), LED walls are assembled from modular cabinets and often have custom resolutions.

Resolution is determined by two factors: the physical screen dimensions and the pixel pitch. For a fixed screen size, a smaller pitch produces more pixels and higher resolution. For a fixed pitch, a larger screen produces more pixels.

Knowing the resolution is essential for content preparation, media player selection, video processor configuration, and evaluating whether the screen can display fine detail at the intended viewing distance.

Resolution formula
Horizontal pixels = screen width (mm) / pixel pitch (mm)
Vertical pixels = screen height (mm) / pixel pitch (mm)
Total pixels = horizontal pixels x vertical pixels
Megapixels = total pixels / 1,000,000
width
Active display width
The physical width of the active LED area, converted from meters to millimeters.
height
Active display height
The physical height of the active LED area, converted from meters to millimeters.
pitch
Pixel pitch
Center-to-center spacing between adjacent LEDs in millimeters.
Screen resolution examples

Conference room wall

  • Width: 4.8 m
  • Height: 2.7 m
  • Pitch: P1.8

Approximate resolution: 2666 x 1500 (4.0 MP, ~16:9).

Close to a standard video workflow. Confirm the actual mapped resolution from cabinet layout before producing content.

Retail atrium screen

  • Width: 6 m
  • Height: 3 m
  • Pitch: P3.9

Approximate resolution: 1538 x 769 (1.2 MP, ~2:1).

Non-standard aspect ratio. Content should be prepared for the actual pixel canvas, not a generic 16:9 video size.

Outdoor billboard

  • Width: 12 m
  • Height: 4 m
  • Pitch: P10

Approximate resolution: 1200 x 400 (0.48 MP, 3:1).

Very low pixel count. Large graphics and short text work well; do not expect fine detail at this pitch.

Common mistakes when planning LED resolution

Assuming 16:9 or 4K content will fit

LED walls rarely match standard broadcast resolutions. Content prepared only in 1920×1080 may be stretched, cropped, or leave black bars. Always design for the actual pixel canvas.

Ignoring cabinet and module pixel matrices

Actual resolution is constrained by how many pixels fit into each cabinet. The vendor's final pixel count may differ from this estimate. Always confirm with cabinet specifications.

Not checking processor and player capabilities

The video processor and media player must support the actual resolution and refresh rate. A high-resolution screen is wasted if the source or processor cannot drive it at full quality.

Confusing pixel pitch with pixel density

Pixel pitch is the physical distance between LED centers in mm. Pixel density (PPI) is the number of pixels per inch. Both affect perceived sharpness, but they are different measures.
