What is Pressure Conversion?
Pressure conversion translates a force-per-area measurement from one unit to another — psi to bar, pascals to atmospheres, and so on. It is essential in engineering, meteorology, medicine, and anywhere fluids or gases are measured.
Pressure has an unusually large number of units because different fields adopted different references. The pascal (Pa) is the SI unit (newtons per square meter). Bar is a metric unit close to one atmosphere. psi (pounds per square inch) is used in the US for tires and hydraulics. atm is based on sea-level air pressure. mmHg comes from mercury barometers and survives in medicine (blood pressure).

How to Convert Pressure Units

How do I convert psi to bar?
Multiply psi by 0.0689 to get bar. For example, 32 psi (typical car tire pressure) = 32 × 0.0689 = 2.2 bar. To go the other way, multiply bar by 14.504. Tire pressure gauges in Europe usually show bar, while US gauges show psi.
What is the difference between atm and bar?
One standard atmosphere (atm) is 101,325 pascals, defined as the average air pressure at sea level. One bar is 100,000 pascals — a round metric unit. They are very close (1 atm = 1.01325 bar), so for rough estimates they can be treated as equal, but for precise work the 1.3% difference matters.
How many pascals are in a kilopascal?
There are 1,000 pascals in one kilopascal (kPa). The pascal is the SI unit of pressure, but it is very small — car tire pressure of 32 psi is about 220,000 pascals. This is why kilopascals and megapascals are more commonly used in engineering.
What is mmHg and why is it used?
mmHg (millimeters of mercury) is a pressure unit based on the height of a mercury column in a barometer — it equals 133.322 pascals. It is still used in medicine for blood pressure (e.g., 120/80 mmHg) and in aviation for altitude. Standard sea-level pressure is 760 mmHg, which equals 1 atm.
